K-6

Imperial Academy provides supplemental materials to assist parents who are using the A Beka home school program. Parents are completely responsible for purchasing, planning and teaching A Beka lessons each day. Elementary teachers use the A Beka curriculum at the school and often supplement the curriculum with additional resources and customized instruction. They make this material available by posting it online. Imperial Academy does not ship textbooks or materials to K-6 students. We highly recommend purchasing the Parent Kit which contains daily lesson plans for your child since Imperial Academy does not provide daily lesson plans for the A Beka program, but that is completely at your discretion.

7-12

Content and assignments for the Middle and High School are managed through a free and open source content management system called MOODLE (Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment).

The classes themselves are conducted through an online meeting website called Adobe Connect. Here, students and teachers can stream their audio and video to a virtual classroom and conduct classes simultaneously with physical classes.

Are the courses the same as those at a traditional high school?

Mostly yes. Imperial Academy adheres to the graduation requirements set forth by the Oklahoma State Board of Education. Imperial Academy offers courses in Theology, English, History, Mathematics, Science, and PE, as well as various electives. Fine Art classes are offered through Imperial Academy Online, but credit is often transferred from either private instructors or other learning institutions.

Do I need to be with my child all day while he is doing schoolwork?

Imperial Academy Online provides parents with curriculum and materials for a home school program. A parent or guardian's committed participation is essential to making a child's experience a success. The parent or guardian is responsible for setting up and monitoring a viable schedule, verifying that course work is being submitted in a satisfactory manner (including correcting a child's assignments), monitoring student progress and facilitating a relationship with the teacher. Parental involvement yields success!

Where can I find outside tutors to help with difficult subjects?

We recommend the Professional Tutors of America at (800) TEACH-US, which is a California-based program providing tutors in 50 states. Once contacted, they will locate a tutor within 15 minutes of your home. The tutor will contact you within 48 hours after you have called Professional Tutors of America. There is a fee for this service.

Is a distance learning education legal?

Since the early 1990s, many state courts have supported the right of parents to teach their children at home and have provided some legal means for distance education. At Imperial Academy we will be happy to provide you or your school district with an IA Information Packet upon request. We encourage you to visit the Home School Legal Defense Association website at www.hslda.org to research your state's laws and regulations.

Will I be able to transfer back to a public school after attending Imperial Academy?

In most cases, yes. In some states, you may have to pass a standardized test at the school to which you are transferring.

Will my child receive a high school diploma from Imperial Academy?

No. Imperial Academy does not issue high school diplomas because we are not accredited. Your child will receive a certificate of completion.

Does a certificate of completion from Imperial Academy limit my child's chances of attending a university?

As with any high school, your choice of classes, grades and ACT results will determine your child's ability to enter any particular university or college.

What are the requirements to graduate from high school at Imperial Academy Online?

See Oklahoma Board of Education graduation requirements.

How many hours of schoolwork can we expect?

Our 7-12th grade students will spend approximately 20 working study hours per week to stay on track with their course requirements. This will vary according to the number of courses, student ability and personal circumstances.

How long are enrolment periods for semester and full-year courses?

Full-year courses are designed to be completed within 10 months; semester courses for five months. Your teachers will provide teacher services during the 10-month period from the date of enrolment. At the end of 10-months, students may arrange a 1-month grace period with their teachers if needed to complete unfinished work.

What if the courses have not been completed by the end of the enrolment period? What are the options?

If sufficient progress has not been made, parents may purchase an extension. In some extreme cases, a full re-enrolment for an individual class may be necessary.

What is Imperial Academy's attendance policy?

All students must make reasonable progress in their coursework. While students may make special arrangements with their teacher, students who have made no progress in a course for 60 days without prior arrangement may be withdrawn from that course by Imperial Academy Online. Withdrawal from a course may be appealed in writing to the Imperial Academy Principal.

Imperial Academy Online courses are designed to fit around the Fall and Spring Holy Days, Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring breaks.

Can I work at my own slower pace or accelerate and move on to the next grade?

Not without approval. Our classes are held live online - as if your child is actually sitting in the classroom. Assignments are due at the same time as the physical class.

What is your withdrawal and drop policy?

You will have 30 days from the first day of school to drop a class for a full refund. Tuition will not be refunded if you choose to drop the class after 30 days. During that 30 day interval you will be able to change a class at no extra cost. You can also add a class during that interval, at which point payment will be due for the standard amount.

If my child drops a course, will it show up on his transcript?

If the course is dropped before the enrollment end date it will not show up on your child's transcript.

Which A Beka program should I purchase for my K-6 grade child?

You will need the Child and Parent kit to ensure a complete curriculum. While the K-6 grades will be on video for a portion of the day, the parent should have the Parent Kit in order to have the structure that you need.

Can I enroll my child in the Bible classes only?

Yes. The cost is $25 per semester ($50/year) for grades 1-12. Kindergarten does not have an online Bible class.

If children in grades K-6 are taking the A Beka program and are only supplementing their schooling with Imperial do they still have to take the placement exam?

Testing is required for grades 7-12. Testing is only recommended for K-6.
